Ukraine is counting on the promise of membership in NATO – Ambassador

Kyiv admits that it is problematic to accept a country that is at war with the Russian Federation into the Alliance.

Ukraine seeks a promise that it will become a member of NATO. Kyiv is also counting on additional obligations regarding air defense. This was announced on Thursday, July 4, by the country's representative in the Alliance, Nataliya Halibarenko, writes Politico .

"We would like the allies to secure Ukraine's irreversible path to NATO membership. We are not asking for anything extraordinary," she said.

She noted that Kyiv recognizes that it is problematic to accept a country at war with Russia into the Alliance. In addition, Ukraine does not control its entire territory. However, as she emphasized, Ukraine is already counting on additional obligations regarding air defense.

Politico writes that some countries, such as the United States and Germany, are "cool" to a quick membership offer, while others closer to the front line with Russia want Ukraine's future status in NATO to be clearly spelled out.

According to Galibarenka, Ukraine understands everything, and that is why it concludes security agreements with individual countries. But the goal remains unchanged – NATO.

"We have made it clear at various levels that the invitation will not disappear from our agenda," Galibarenko said.
