Macron called on the G7 to phase out coal by 2030

French President Emmanuel Macron called on the G7 countries to commit to abandoning the use of coal by 2030 to set an example for other countries.

He said this from the podium of the COP28 international climate summit in Dubai. "The G7 countries should set an example and commit to phasing out coal earlier than others, that is, by 2030. We must allow developing countries to catch up with us economically. But this pursuit should not take place on the basis of carbon sources of energy, in particular coal," said the French leader.

According to Macron, France must also "finally turn the page (and abandon the use – ed.) of oil by 2040-45, gas – by 2050." He also mentioned his country's commitment to close the last coal-fired power plant by 2027.
