As a result, 5 million hectares of arable land are currently unused in Ukraine.
Anatoliy Razgon, consultant on land issues of the Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, reported this in Ukrinform during a round table on the topic: "Environmental security of Ukraine: national and international dimension".
"Due to the war, Ukraine lost 19.3% of arable land, more than 5 million hectares of arable land are not used today. These are the territories that are disfigured by war today. "According to the estimates of the Ministry of Environment, over 900 billion hryvnias have been caused to the soil due to the war," said Razgon.
According to him, as of 2023, the area of degraded agricultural land can be estimated at 10-15 million hectares. Taking into account climate changes, more than half of such lands are at risk of degradation. If appropriate measures are not taken, these lands will be at risk and will eventually be withdrawn from cultivation.
"It is quite obvious that after the end of the war, without taking emergency measures at the state level and the support of the international community, Ukraine may lose a third of its cultivated land – 10-12 million hectares – for years. This is 30-35 million tons of grain, which can provide food for a significant part of the planet's inhabitants," the expert emphasized.
